Small Claims
Small claims cases are generally any case where one party sues another party for less than $10,000 (as of September 1, 2007). These cases are normally filed in JP Courts (often referred to as small claims courts) located throughout the Houston area.
In many small claims cases, plaintiffs and defendants will decide to represent themselves. Sometimes however - especially where the dollar amount in question reaches beyond $1,000, it may make more sense to hire an attorney to help you with filing the lawsuit (or responding to a lawsuit which has been filed against you) and represent your interests in court.
How much does it cost to file a small claims lawsuit?
The cost to file a small claims lawsuit against in the JP Courts of Harris County is $95 ($30 of this fee is for court costs; $65 is the fee for service on a single defendant. In cases where there are multiple defendants, there may be additional service fees for extra defendants.)
